[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign.
[00:00:11] Speaker B: What'S worthwhile healing Mind, body and spirit. I'm Ramsey Zimmerman. I choose peace of mind, vitality of body, and joy of spirit over stress, exhaustion, or overwhelm. Together, let's explore and pursue the many ways to build holistic health and wellness.
[00:00:31] Speaker A: I was really struggling in my life. I was dealing with insomnia. I had anxiety that would manifest as panic attacks every week, and it was taking over my life. I decided that I'm not going to settle for somebody else's definition of what's normal for me. And for me, normal felt like having energy throughout the day. Normal felt like feeling calm and peaceful, like having decent sleep.
So I kept learning and I kept researching and I kept trying to figure out, you know, there's got to be a way that I could feel better. And that's when I stumbled upon magnesium. I started using it on my skin and literally I went from sleeping about two hours a night to sleeping six hours a night in that first week.
And then the anxiety started to go away, the panic attacks stop, and I started feeling like myself again.
[00:01:20] Speaker B: Hey there. It's Ramsay here. That was Natalie Jurado.
[00:01:24] Speaker C: Natalie is the founder and CEO of Rooted In, a pioneer in developing and marketing wonderful creams with a therapeutic dose of magnesium chloride which is absorbed directly through the skin. I'm going to jump ahead and tell you that I got a jar of this cream for my wife and it has done wonders for her sleep from the night she started using it. Listeners get a 15% discount when using the promo code Worthwhile at their website, www.berootedin.com that's spelled B E Rootedin.com Natalie did not take no for an answer from her doctor and did not take no for an answer when she couldn't find a magnesium product to meet her needs.
Instead, she created a company and multiple formulations and brought them to all of us. I'm grateful. Try some yourself and see what you think. Let's meet Natalie.
[00:02:15] Speaker D: Hey, Natalie. How are you doing today?
[00:02:17] Speaker A: I am fantastic.
[00:02:19] Speaker D: Great. Well, thanks for coming in and being with me today. You are the founder of Rooted in and you're an expert in all things magnesium.
You know, I've been learning a lot about magnesium.
Obviously, it's clearly a powerful and versatile and necessary micronutrient in our body. It does a ton of different things.
But let me ask you, why magnesium for you specifically? Why have you dedicated yourself to magnesium like this?
[00:02:53] Speaker A: Yeah. So, you know, it just like most things, it starts with a problem, right? Most, most, most great ideas start with a problem.
And it was about, gosh, many, many years ago. I was really struggling in my life. I was dealing with insomnia. I had anxiety that would manifest as panic attacks every week, and it was taking over my life. So. So, you know, I did what any normal person would do. I scheduled that doctor's appointment, went straight to the doctor, and she was gracious enough to offer me, like, every test under the sun. Like, I felt like a human pin cushion with all the blood that was drawn out of me. But at the end of the day, she went over all the results with me. She sat me down, she looked me straight in the face, and she said, natalie, there's nothing wrong with you. Your blood work is perfect. You are completely healthy. And then she went on to tell me that as a woman of a certain age, you know, when we get to a certain age, things start to fall apart. And this is just what I could expect from here on out, which was horrible, horrible feeling to have, you know, thinking that this would be my life from here on out.
So I kept learning and I kept researching and I kept trying to figure out, you know, there's got to be a way that I could feel better. And that's when I stumbled upon magnesium. I started using it on my skin, and literally, I went from sleeping about two hours a night to sleeping six hours a night in that first week.
And then the anxiety started to go away, the panic attacks stop, and I started feeling like myself again. But what happened is it really kind of sparked this anger and this frustration because why didn't anybody tell me about this? Why. Why aren't we talking about magnesium? Why isn't it something that's been brought up in doctor's offices? And it really kind of sparked this mission to get magnesium into the hands of everybody who struggles to feel their best.
[00:04:32] Speaker D: Yes, it's gotta be. It's gotta be frustrating just to have a doctor say, oh, you're fine.
Like, well, okay, but I'm not fine. Like, I know that there's something going on. I don't know what it.
But then you really had to take it upon yourself to go out and find, you know, what was going on and what you could do about it.
What was that. What was that search like for you?
[00:05:05] Speaker A: Well, really, it was a defining moment for me because I decided in that moment that I'm not going to settle for somebody else's definition of what's normal for me. Like, that that may be normal on the paperwork. It might be normal according to my doctor, but it Was not normal to me. And that's where I was like, nope, nope. We are redefining what is normal now. And for me, normal felt like having energy throughout the day. Normal felt like feeling calm and peaceful. Normal felt like sleep, like having decent sleep. That all felt normal to me. So really kind of push it. Pushing back on those standards of what normal is really kind of changed the trajectory of my path.
[00:05:45] Speaker D: Yeah. And then how did you start sort of getting the magnesium? Like, you're. Do you.
How was that sort of new and different? And. And how did you figure that out? What was what? How did you start, you know, treating yourself that way?
[00:06:05] Speaker A: So people had told me before, they were like, you know, you should try magnesium. I heard magnesium can help with sleep. And so I did what any normal person would do. Go to the, you know, health food store or to the local pharma pharmacy, grab a jar of magnesium off the shelf and start popping some pills.
And it didn't work for me, you know, so. So for me, I discounted magnesium altogether. I'm like, well, I tried it. I bought, you know, I bought the $10 pills from the local pharmacy.
Didn't work. Let me move on to the next thing. It really felt like I was throwing spaghetti at the wall, trying all the different things that people would tell me to do.
And so when I had eventually discovered topical magnesium and started using it that way, I. It was. It was life changing. It was totally different. And I got really frustrated because I kept thinking, but I tried magnesium. Why is this form working for me? And that's when I really started peeling back the layers of the onion when it came to the research and figuring out what this whole magnesium story is all about.
[00:06:59] Speaker D: Well, and there are many different types of magnesium too. Right. And the different types do different things in different ways, and they have different kind of side effects, and they sort of treat your body differently.
And I'd like to get into that a bit. You know, I don't want to do an exhaustive.
I'm gonna have to take a lot of notes if we do a really exhaustive thing. But why don't we start with kind of how would people sort of know or suspect or understand that they might be deficient in magnesium or that, you know, a certain type of magnesium. Right. Might really benefit them.
[00:07:42] Speaker A: Absolutely. So let's start at the beginning. How do we even know if we're low in magnesium? So the first thing is the symptoms. The symptoms of low magnesium can be varied. So we're looking at everything from muscle cramps and muscle spasms, you know, that twitch that we get under our eyes, those muscle cramps, that calf cramp or half hamstring cramp that wakes you up in the middle of the night, difficulty sleeping, difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, heightened anxiety and stress. Like it's stress that kind of comes out of nowhere and it feels very uncontrollable. That mind racing, excessive worry, that anxiousness, chronic headaches, elevated blood pressure, elevated cholesterol and high blood sugar as well are all related to low magnesium. So now I just said a bunch of different symptoms. And I'm sure when you think about it, you, either you or somebody you know, has probably suffered from some of those symptoms and you're probably thinking, yeah, that, that could be a number of different things. Right?
Well, the truth of the matter is about 70% of the population fails to get enough magnesium in their body every single day. So that's seven out of 10 people who are not getting enough magnesium and they start to feel these symptoms. Unfortunately, these symptoms are typically overlooked. It's typically, you know, pushed off as something else. Oh, well, you probably have this, this, this or that other thing. Right. That's why they call magnesium deficiency the invisible deficiency. It's the underlying cause. It's the beginning domino for so many chronic diseases. And so many times, if we address that first domino, all the other ones won't start to fall down. When we look at magnesium deficiency and magnesium in general, we find that it's present in every. Magnesium is present in every single one of our cells, and it's responsible for over 700 different functions in your body. So it makes sense that if you're low on it, all the other things are going to start to break. You know, everything else isn't going to work if we don't have that foundational mineral.
[00:09:44] Speaker D: Yeah, well, it's, it's funny you say that 7 out of 10 people are probably somewhat magnesium deficient. And then you listed all of those things. I would guess that 7 out of 10 people feel those things that you're describing in terms of headaches and low level anxiety and stress and all that stuff. And yes, like those are caused by many different things. Things. But, you know, when I learned about magnesium, it was in the context of being the co factor of basically every significant chemical reaction inside of your body. It's just one of those things that you, that absolutely everyone needs and that your body uses all the time and we just don't have enough of it. I mean, what types of like, foods are high in magnesium that people should be eating and that if they're not eating enough of, they're not getting enough magnesium from.
[00:10:44] Speaker A: So, of course, it's all those foods that we just generally don't like. I mean, if magnesium was in hamburgers and pizza, we would not have any problems at all. Right. But magnesium is found in those green leafy vegetables, those nuts and seeds like chia seeds and pumpkin seeds and almonds. It's found in coconut water. That's one of my favorite ways to get magnesium and even in dark chocolate. So outside of the chocolate, all those other foods are foods that we simply don't eat enough of in the standard American diet.
[00:11:12] Speaker D: So the message that I'm getting from you is that we need to put kale and nuts and dark chocolate on our pizza.
[00:11:20] Speaker A: I mean, I think that's a good start. Yeah.
Well, and the other side of that is that our farming practices have changed just dramatically over the last 50 to 100 years. Like, when we think about it, we eat apples in the middle of the summer in Florida. You know, that's not something that grows here. So we eat eating produce that's out of season. We're eating, you know, produce that's been mass produced in other countries, then shipped over months later here to the United States, and that dramatically decreases the nutritional value of our food. So for reference, in order to get enough magnesium from spinach, which is, you know, a high source of magnesium, in order to get enough from spinach, you would have to eat 10 cups of raw spinach every single day. You'd have to eat 2 cups of pumpkin seeds every day. So it would be a lot of food.
[00:12:11] Speaker D: Hmm.
I'm just thinking about what the. The side effects of eating 10 cups of spinach per day might be.
Okay, don't want to go there.
So, okay, so the answer is just to go to the grocery store and buy, you know, whatever cheapest bottle of magnesium pills are on the shelf that say magnesium. Right. Because they're all the same.
[00:12:36] Speaker A: Yeah. No, not even close. I think this is the biggest issue. People go to the health food store, they grab a jar of magnesium, they pop a few pills, and then they're like, okay, everything's fine.
And this is what stops people from getting the results that they really are truly looking for from magnesium. There's over 14 different forms of magnesium. Some of them do a great job of raising your levels. Others, not so much. Others might actually leave you in the bathroom all day long and give you those nasty side effects. So figuring out which type is best for your body and your unique needs is a bit of a trial and error process.
So in general, if people learn nothing else, from what I'm saying today, if they only learn this, then they're going to be ahead of 99% of the population. And that is there are forms that don't absorb well, namely magnesium oxide. Magnesium oxide is a form that only absorbs at a rate of 4%, which means every time you take a pill, you're absorbing 4%. The other 96% is going right through your digestive tract and leaving you uncomfortable in the bathroom. We don't want that. Right. So that form, we generally want to avoid that. Unfortunately, magnesium oxide is the form that is most recommended by doctors. It is most likely to find it in your local pharmacy, and it is the cheapest form of magnesium out there. So that's likely what most people are grabbing off the shelf when they go to the pharmacy. There are better forms, forms like magnesium glycinate, magnesium malate, citrate, taurate, threonate. All of those are good and acceptable forms of magnesium that are going to absorb at a much, much higher rate.
[00:14:18] Speaker D: Okay, so not oxide, but glycinate is really good.
And I also understand that threonate is good especially for sort of neural kind of brain kinds of things, because it goes through the blood brain barrier.
And then what type of magnesium do you have in the cream that is, you know, that you can absorb through your skin?
[00:14:50] Speaker A: Absolutely. And a side note about magnesium threonate is it does absorb very well. It has been studied to cross through the blood brain barrier, but no other form has been studied. So we don't know if all magnesium does it or if it's just that one form. The other drawback about 3 and 8 is while it works very, very well, it is very expensive, and it typically comes in very low doses. So that means you'll wind up paying a ton of money for a supplement that you could probably get similar benefits from taking something cheaper.
[00:15:23] Speaker D: Good to know.
[00:15:24] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. And in terms of topical magnesium, so that's. That's a magnesium that I'm a huge fan of. That's what I personally got the best results from. There are two forms of magnesium that goes on your skin. The first one is magnesium sulf sulfate, and we know this form as Epsom salts. So Epsom salts are magnesium sulfate. You can get them at the dollar store for $1.25 for a big old bag. And you can take those wonderful and relaxing Epsom salt baths that our grandmothers used to tell us about. Every single time we got injured, it would go soak an Epsom salt bath.
You know, that works. It works well. It's a nice, affordable way to get more magnesium into your system quickly. So taking those Epsom salt baths and the other form is magnesium chloride, and that's what I am incredibly passionate about. Magnesium chloride goes right on your skin. It is incredibly bioavailable. It absorbs significantly faster than other forms, and there's no risk of side effects. You simply apply it to your skin and you get those incredible benefits.
People often ask, you know, like, does it really work? You know, does using something on your skin actually make a difference?
And I will tell you, there are studies out there that show show that using topical magnesium absorbs about five times faster than a pill or a powder, and you can get much faster results.
So it is really quite effective.
[00:16:47] Speaker D: And is it effective when you use it topically? Is it effective specifically in that area or is it effective body wide systemically?
[00:16:59] Speaker A: So there has. There was one study done, I want to say it was done in 2017, and they showed that using 500ml milligrams of magnesium chloride on your skin twice a day could raise your magnesium levels by close to 60% in about 12 weeks. To get that same result with a pill or powder, it would take nine to 24 months. So we're finding there are. The drawback is the studies are limited. You know, there's only a couple, a handful of studies that have been out there that have been done on topical magnesium, but the ones that have been done are showing really good promise. So we are seeing that it does have the potential to raise your systemic levels. But one of the reasons why I really, really love topical magnesium is because you can target certain areas of your body.
So if you are, for instance, dealing with calf cramps, you know, if you're an athlete, you're running all the time, you're out there sweating, and you're getting those calf cramps in the middle of your run. You can simply apply topical magnesium to the calf. It'll get into that tissue and it'll start to relax that muscle tissue right away, as opposed to taking a pill or a powder, you'd have to digest it. It get dispersed throughout your entire body, and some of it will make it to that muscle tissue. Using that targeted approach can be very helpful.
[00:18:12] Speaker D: And you mentioned, I think it was 500 grams as like the therapeutic dose.
How much, how much cream are we talking about? Like, how much do you have to really put on to get to that level.
[00:18:27] Speaker A: Absolutely. So when. When we created our product, we created about four or five years ago, we based it off of that study. So our magnesium creams for every teaspoon of our cream. So a tiny little bit has 500 milligrams of magnesium chloride in it. So it works really fast and you don't have to use a whole bunch.
[00:18:45] Speaker D: Yeah, no, that's. That seems like the right amount there, you know, like a good blob on your fingers to rub in.
So I have to say that I have picked up a jar of your cream.
It was the Tranquility cream, which is one of the three products, and we can talk about the differences there.
And like any good husband, I got it for my wife.
And I was like, hey, honey, I got. Got you this magnesium cream. And she's like, what?
Because. And she was very skeptical. She does, like, she does enjoy creams in general. She. She doesn't sleep super great. So it's.
I. I would never say that she's of a certain age, but so, you know, she has just some trouble getting to sleep and then some trouble staying asleep throughout the night. But she does enjoy, you know, putting on creams. And so she was like, okay, fine, I'll try this snake oil cream that you got me, honey.
So we opened it up, and first of all, it smelled wonderful.
Really smelled great.
And she put it on her shoulders, and she's been using it for about a week. And the first day, she's like, oh, I slept great. I slept through the night and in the morning and the second night, and it was sort of like, well, but that's only one. She's a scientist, so that was only one time.
And then the second night, she did as well. And so the second night and the third night.
So three nights in a row of perfect sleep, which is, I think, statistically significant for her experience.
And then it's been several nights since then, too. She said that she did wake up a little bit, like, in the early morning, but she was able to get back to sleep really quickly afterwards, which was. Is not often her experience.
So we do have a. We do have a customer testimony testimonial here.
[00:20:42] Speaker A: Oh, I love hearing that. That. That just makes my heart just so happy.
Sleep is one of those things that, you know, without it, our body doesn't work properly. You know, we get memory fog. The next day, we get increased cravings. Our cortisol levels go up there. So much havoc that lack of sleep causes our body. And when you finally get that good night's Sleep. It's like you feel like a superhero, you know, the next day you feel like you can conquer the world.
[00:21:08] Speaker D: Yeah, absolutely. So sleep.
What else? What are some of the other big sort of things that your products are sort of tailored to address because you have three separate formulations. Right. So, you know, how are those different and what are they for?
[00:21:26] Speaker A: Yeah, so our relief cream is our most popular, and that one is specifically formulated for aches, pains, soreness, and muscle recovery. So it's made not only with magnesium, but also arnica and white willow bark and ginger and comfrey and all these beautiful herbs that have been used for thousands of years to alleviate aches and pains naturally.
So that one tends to be our bestseller, believe it or not. I think a lot of people deal with pain and they don't want to take those pain pills all the time and popping Tylenol all the time. So it's a great way to address cramping. Muscle recovery is really good if you're working out a lot. Magnesium helps pull lactic acid out of your muscles. So it's a great way to kind of recover after a really hard workout.
[00:22:09] Speaker D: You can rub it right in, you know, with muscles, soreness, and cramps. There's just something about being able to just rub it right in on the spot, you know, instead of like popping a pill and waiting half an hour, an hour or whatever, because. And then you get the. The benefit of the actual physical massage in addition to the therapeutic benefits of the ingredients.
[00:22:29] Speaker A: Absolutely. We. I have customers who tell me all the time that they take the cream to their massage therapist and have them use it in their massages, and they say it's just next level. So definitely it works really well. Our other formulas are Rest Formula. Rest Formula is created to help you, you sleep. So it's got the passion flower and the chamomile and the lavender in there. So very relaxing for sleep. And then our tranquility formula, which is the cream that you mentioned, was created specifically to bring down those cortisol levels. So we have some people who help. They use it at nighttime to help them sleep, especially if their sleep is interrupted by a racing mind.
But we have a lot of people use it during the day to help with that anxiety and stress. So that's my personal favorite is tranquility, because I tend to be a high anxiety kind of person.
[00:23:13] Speaker D: So does that mean that you can, like, sneak off to the restroom and put on some tranquility cream and sort of chill out in the middle of the day?
[00:23:20] Speaker A: Oh, yeah, absolutely. We have people who. They keep it on their desk at work because they have a boss that drives them crazy or they.
I have customers who have trauma from car accidents, so they put it on right before they start driving their car, and it helps them stay a little bit more grounded.
[00:23:35] Speaker D: Yeah. You know, I've been wondering why with my employees, when I. I walk into their office, every time I walk in, they sort of open up this tranquility jar and start, like, rubbing it in.
[00:23:46] Speaker A: No correlation there.
[00:23:48] Speaker D: No, I'm sure that's a coincidence.
Oh, man.
So what about, like, are there any side effects or downsides to the cream? Like, is it possible to OD on magnesium using this cream?
[00:24:02] Speaker A: No. So when it comes to topical magnesium, your skin will. Will absorb what your body needs. And I always like to liken this to going to the beach. So, you know, I live in Florida. There's beaches everywhere. I love the beach.
When you swim in the ocean, the ocean is made up of 35% magnesium chloride. So the same magnesium that's in our cream is in the ocean. And oftentimes when we go to the beach, we swim all day long. And nobody ever says, get out of the ocean. You're going to overdose on magnesium. Like, that has never been said in the history of. Of time. But what happens when you go to the beach is you feel relaxed, you don't have leg cramps that day. You sleep like a baby, the stress goes away. Like, you know, all of that happens when you're swimming in the ocean all day long.
[00:24:45] Speaker D: Wow. So you've got ocean water in a cream now.
[00:24:49] Speaker A: Yep. Basic. Basically, it's like vacation in a bottle.
[00:24:54] Speaker D: New slogan for you.
So when did the product come out and what was there before? Like, did you guys come up with this? Were you. You know, you sort of.
You're kind of a. You were a pioneer in this market. Right? Tell me more about sort of that. That story.
[00:25:15] Speaker A: Yeah, absolutely. So at the time when I started using magnesium on my skin, I was using a magnesium chloride spray. So you'll see, like, it kind of went. Magnesium sprays kind of went viral all over, like, social media and the last last couple years, because it works, you know, magnesium chloride, you put it on your skin, works great. The problem with the sprays is that it's such a high concentration of magnesium chloride that's not properly PH balanced, and it causes your skin to itch and irritate, turn red. A lot of people get rashes because it's just too much for your skin. It's not properly balanced. So I thought, well, if we could take that and turn it into a cream that feels good on your skin, that's part of your regular everyday habits, because so many of us wear moisturizers every day.
And something you felt good about using, that didn't irritate you, I mean, would that fill the gap? And that's what we did. So it took us about two years working with six different chemists from all around the world to create this formula. So we really did a lot of trial and error. We wanted to make sure that it was based off of clinical research, that it would give you a therapeutic amount of magnesium without hurting or disrupting your skin barrier.
[00:26:23] Speaker D: Good. And what has happened in the time since? Have you gotten a lot of competitors and copycats, as I would imagine that you would?
[00:26:32] Speaker A: Oh, of course, absolutely. So we've. We've launched it about four years ago. We sold out 10 times.
We're actually about to sell out again on. On a relief cream. So it's been really, really like the demand has been amazing. People, people who buy it, they always come back and buy it over and over and over again. So we. We've seen such a beautiful response of lives completely and utterly being changed. But with that comes some attention. So, yeah, we've had so many knockoffs and so many copycats, and we're dealing with it all the time, trying to stop the copycats, because unfortunately, beauty brands will see a trend and they'll take their regular everyday body moisturizer, put two or three drops of magnesium in it, and then sell it as a magnesium cream. Cream. Without doing all the clinical research involved in creating a therapeutic cream.
[00:27:20] Speaker D: Yeah, so I imagine it's. It's about, like, the dosage and the purity and, you know, making sure that it is, in fact, what it says it is, instead of, you know, be having the. The true ingredients that the label is, is reflecting.
[00:27:41] Speaker A: Absolutely, absolutely. And so much goes into it. Like, for instance, we only use essential oils. You mentioned how great the cream smells. We only use essential oils because they have incredible therapeutic value.
We're one of the only companies that use essential oils. So many of the other ones use artificial fragrances, and artificial fragrances can disrupt your hormones. Many of them are endocrine disruptors that cause bigger problems down the road.
We also only package in glass because magnesium deteriorates plastic. It'll just break it right down. And so we are one of the only brands that use glass instead of plastic. So there's so much that goes into it. There's so much intentionality. Behind creating a product that really works.
[00:28:19] Speaker D: And where do, where do people find it? Where do they find more information, learn more, where do they find you online to get in touch if they want to?
[00:28:29] Speaker A: We, we are located at, @berootedin.com that's our website. But we are. You can also find us on Amazon, you can also find us on Tik Tok Shop and then across all social media. I'm be rooted in so super easy to find and I respond to messages. So people reach out every day with questions about their magnesium supplements, how to use it, how much to take, you know which one's the best one to take. And I'm always there to help out and assist however I can.
[00:28:56] Speaker D: That's great. And can we, can we offer a little discount or a little incentive for listeners today?
[00:29:03] Speaker A: Absolutely, absolutely.
