Ever feel brain dead and incapable of stringing two thoughts together? Recovering from that is such a relief. Last week I was toast (I hate being sick, even with a head cold), but this week I feel like myself again, and I’m fired up about not only sharing what I’ve learned from my journey, but inviting folks onto their own journeys to get better before burnout sets in. I lay out the foundations of health that we can use for recovery, but that’s only the half of it … there’s a lot more that we need, in order to get the right things to stick in our everyday lives.

[00:00:00] Foreign. [00:00:11] What's Worthwhile Healing Mind, Body and Spirit I'm Ramsey Zimmerman. I choose peace of mind, vitality of body, and joy of spirit over stress, exhaustion, or overwhelm. Together, let's explore and pursue the many ways to build holistic health and wellness. [00:00:32] Hey there, it's Ramsay here. What a difference a week makes. I felt like garbage last week. Like I couldn't do anything. [00:00:40] After some rest and some bone broth and some sleep, I could think straight again and remember what I've been working on. Fact is, we can come back from tough weeks or tough years by taking care of ourselves and our foundations of health. [00:00:55] But if it were easy to do that and stick to doing the right things, we'd all be perfect and have nothing to talk about. [00:01:02] Instead, we need to look at our purpose, our motivation, our habits, and what even to do with strength when we have it. Yes indeed, my mind is working again and I want to lay it all out for you. [00:01:18] I had a lousy week last week. [00:01:21] I brought home a head cold from a visit with family over the weekend. [00:01:25] I wasn't motivated early in the week and by Wednesday night I couldn't deny it any longer. I was sick Thursday. I just gave in and spent the day in and out of bed being a zombie. [00:01:37] When I get sick, which is maybe once a year, knock on wood. [00:01:42] What bothers me the most is not being able to string two thoughts together. [00:01:46] I just have to tell myself this is temporary. [00:01:49] I'm not actually brain dead, I'm just brain comatose. [00:01:53] I should watch more Star Trek and I'll be able to remember why the time travel episode I'm watching makes no logical sense tomorrow. [00:02:02] And it worked. I woke up Friday morning with my senses and my sensibility returned. [00:02:08] So I started by rereading some of my own stuff, specifically the new and upcoming stuff I've been working on for the 12 week better before Burnout Journey. One of the core components of that program is daily eight minute audio messages. [00:02:23] Well, five days per week that support people through the three month transformation. I reread the themes and outlines and drafts with new eyes and a freshly rebooted brain. I have to say I'm really excited about this program. I really think it's going to be the coolest thing I've ever developed and worked on. Well, let's see. Will it be cooler than the Green building demonstration house we built inside the Reuse center warehouse back in the mid-90s? [00:02:49] Hmm. [00:02:50] Tough call. Tough comparison. Definitely on that level though. The 12 week Bedriffour burnout Journey is geared directly for guys who are working hard every day, doing their best, trying to succeed in their professional and family lives, but struggling because it's a lot responsibilities, deadlines, expectations, trying to do it all at the expense of their own health and sanity. [00:03:17] Sound familiar? I think we all deal with this to some extent or another, and sometimes we're good about taking care of ourselves, but often we're not. When stress from work and family life goals get intense, I don't know, maybe I'm starting to sound like a broken record for my young listeners. That's an old cliche, which means you're repeating yourself. [00:03:41] But in the last couple years since I began asking what's worthwhile? I feel like I've figured some things out that I want to deliberately emphasize and share Something like this the mind, body and spirit are connected and actions that we take impact them all in different ways and they impact each other as we go along all the time. We need to think for ourselves, seek truth, get as many opinions and perspectives as we can find, and we should speak up and share what we think as well. [00:04:14] We should also be mindful and pay attention to what we're doing, what we're saying, and how we're living. We should support our minds, bodies and spirits with the foundations of good health. [00:04:26] We should eat nutrient dense whole foods and avoid ultra processed foods. We should focus on eating while we eat, slow down, chew our food to improve digestion and eat foods that agree with us. [00:04:42] We should eat the right things at the right times in the right order for smooth, steady blood sugar regulation. [00:04:48] We should respond well to stress through breathing, awareness, expression and movement. [00:04:56] We should get regular exercise like daily walks, cardio, lifting heavy things, sports, whatever we're into and whatever works well for us. [00:05:07] We should also rest and prioritize getting enough high quality sleep. [00:05:13] All of those foundations are synergistic and work together. [00:05:17] I know they seem obvious when you just list them off like that. So what's the big deal? Why do we struggle to do all the right things? [00:05:29] Do you feel exhausted before your day even starts or do you struggle to balance demanding work and family with everything else? Do you wonder how to say no without guilt or set boundaries when everyone needs things from you? Does burnout feel inevitable no matter how hard you try to push through? Then check out my new book on Amazon, Stress Response Manage your response to stress in order to reduce anxiety, avoid burnout, and find calm and steady focus. Now available on Amazon.com Turns out that just knowing and thinking about all the Right things is just the half of it. [00:06:02] We actually need to make all those things part of our lives. [00:06:07] How? [00:06:08] Well, purpose is key. Your why why do you want to be healthy? Often we need to ask why two or three layers deep to get to the real reason. [00:06:20] Even once we know why, we need motivation to keep us moving sometimes. Often it's fear at first that gets us moving, but that only gets us so far. [00:06:32] We need to tap into love for sustainable forward motion. [00:06:37] We need discipline to do the right things on the days when motivation wanes. [00:06:43] Discipline is not always natural though, as opposed to habits which are ingrained. [00:06:49] So we need to break some lousy habits and develop new ones. [00:06:53] We can stack some new habits on top of existing ones we intend to keep. [00:06:58] Meanwhile, we're tempted to return to old ways, familiar coping mechanisms. Are these new ways a passing fad or the new normal? We need humility to understand that we can fall back at any time. It's good to seek the help of our higher power. [00:07:17] Renewal does come and it is real and powerful, even though sometimes painful and mysterious. [00:07:26] As things begin to get better, to go right, we build momentum and we should focus on those gains. Appreciate our progress. [00:07:34] We find renewed strength within and can begin to apply it. [00:07:38] The goal is to find a new balance, not to go overboard, overshoot the mark with new zeal or intensity that we can't possibly maintain for the long term. [00:07:50] Health is a harmony of pursuing the important things in life. As we feel better and stronger, we can now once again look outward towards the people that we care about, those who care about us, those who count on us. [00:08:04] This is what strength is for, its best use to serve others, to serve greater goods, to make differences and to accomplish things. [00:08:14] We can all be leaders. [00:08:16] We should all think of ourselves as leaders, whether we have fancy titles or not. [00:08:22] At minimum, we lead ourselves. [00:08:24] And I dare say that everyone has at least someone who looks to them for leadership. As we lead, we influence, we blaze a trail, we show what's possible. [00:08:35] We should share the stories of our struggles and successes to inform and inspire others who need to go on their own journey. Our shared stories are part of our legacies. [00:08:48] As we get better, get back on track. There isn't a singular destination. [00:08:53] We live, we thrive, we experience joy and we share it with others. [00:08:59] This is the journey that I've been on. This is the journey I choose to be on. If you're feeling fried right now, like you're gonna lose it, please reach out.
